SEASONAL LOAD LIMIT NOTIFICATION

SUBJECT: Full-summer overweight permits available in South, Southeast, and Metro Frost Zones.

Date: May 4, 2026

  • Full-summer overweight permits will become available in the SOUTH, SOUTHEAST, and METRO frost zones on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 12:01 AM.

  • Check with local road authorities for continued restrictions on local roads and adhere to all load restriction posting signs.

  • Seasonal load limit (frost) zones and restricted routes are shown on the MnDOT load limits map.

  • Start and end dates, along with other load limit information, are available at mndot.gov/loadlimits.

  • Overweight permits for more than 80,000 pound gross vehicle weight continue during spring load restrictions and new permits will be issued if all axle and group weights are legal (axle weight limits).

  • Full-summer overweight permits can be issued, during the spring load restriction period, for travel on the interstate system only.

  • Middle-range overweight permits become available within each zone when spring load restrictions are lifted. Full-summer overweight permits become available two to three weeks after spring load restrictions are lifted. 

  • Ending dates for spring load restrictions vary depending on how the weather affects roadway strength.

Please note: Weight restrictions do not apply to emergency and service vehicles such as fire trucks, utility service vehicles, buses, and garbage trucks.
